Chapter 14

“Eliza,” she greeted me with a curt nod. “I hear from the onlookers over there that you ran into the witchfire.”

“Yes,” I replied. “Although I didn’t know what it was.”

“Didn’t you?” she replied, cocking an eyebrow, and I shook my head.

“No. Kaillie might have known, having grown up with magic, but not me. No one in the family ever mentioned it, and from what Ellie tells me about it, it’s not the sort of thing we ever would have made in the human world. I wouldn’t be surprised if the knowledge of it was lost to the whole family over the generations.”

“That would make sense,” Chief Enforcer Upepo admitted, nodding. “It’s simply a surprise to meet a witch who has never heard of witchfire. But of course, your circumstances are unique.”

“Do you know who could have done this?” Ellie asked, and Chief Enforcer Upepo shot her a look.

“You know I can’t answer that. However, I do have to ask you some questions. I’ve already spoken with Amy, but can you tell me what happened?”

I recounted the whole story as best as I could remember it, starting with the fact that we’d been just finishing our lunch when we heard the first shouts from the street and saw the smoke rising from the building.

“What made you go into the building to get the dogs?” Chief Enforcer Upepo asked.

I shrugged. “Well, someone had to. They were going to die, otherwise.”

“Weren’t you worried for your own safety?”

“Sure, but I mean, I’ve been in danger other times as well. It sucks, but those dogs were in danger, too. I couldn’t just let them die without trying to save them first.”

Chief Enforcer Upepo nodded approvingly. “Good for you. I don’t know a lot of witches who would have done the same. And you found the broom in the bedroom?”

“That’s right,” I said, nodding. “I don’t know how to ride, but luckily Ellie saw me flying from the building and grabbed a broom herself and guided me to safety.”

“Well, I’m glad it’s all worked out,” Chief Enforcer Upepo said. “Did any of you see anyone or anything suspicious in the moments before the witchfire was set?”

The three of us shared glances but all shook our heads. “No,” I said. “I didn’t see anything. I don’t think anyone came near where we were in the park in the few minutes before we left.”

“Agreed,” Amy said. “I didn’t see anyone. But we were all facing the lake. Someone could have passed quietly behind us and we wouldn’t have seen them.”

“Alright, thank you,” Chief Enforcer Upepo said. “If you think of anything that could help, please let me know.”

“We will,” I promised.

The three of us watched as she walked off. “Well, at least she doesn’t believe you set the fire,” Ellie said. “That’s something.”

“You’re right, it doesn’t sound like she thinks I’m the arsonist,” I replied. “That’s a relief, at least.”

“I wonder if you were supposed to be suspected, though,” Amy said, frowning.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Well, think about it.
